The little black dress is a wardrobe staple that every girl should have. I have at least four different styles in my wardrobe and I must say they are some of my most worn wardrobe items. I know the trend this time of the year is to swap your little black dress for a little white one and I totally agree. White is more clean and crisp and exudes that summer vibe but the LBD is not to be forgotten. Especially if you already have one handy. You can make your LBD work for the summer in more ways than one and in today's post I'll be showing you how I make my Nicce London essential dress work for me in 3 different ways.
For my first look think holidays and resorts or in my case a stroll down the high street on a hot summers day. I dressed this really sexy mini dress down by adding an oversized striped shirt. This definitely brought the sexy factor down quite a few notches and added a more relaxed vibe. You could leave the shirt open and be on about your day or you could tie it up at the front and throw one side off your shoulder for a more stylised look. I just love the off the shoulder trend so I had to go for the latter and I felt like this made the outfit a little bit more dynamic and interesting. I kept the footwear super simple with some white plimsoles but these could always be swapped out for some flat sandals, slides or the new in-thing; wedged espadrille sandals. I finished off the look with some round sunnies and my little basket bag which I feel adds to the summer and holiday vibe.
This look for me is super simple and fuss free and perfect for a hot day. I also love that the black dress acts as a foundation and can be built on to suit your style. You can swap the shirt for a kimono if that's more your taste or you can even throw on a mesh dress and a huge basket bag and still be resort/holiday ready. This is perfect if you're travelling light because with one dress as your base you can have a plethora of outfits to work with.
The second look is something I'd wear to a meeting. In my industry I'm lucky enough that I don't have to adhere to a "smart" dress code but when meetings do come around I do like to look a little bit more put together. In hot weather, I find that the perfect way to make a little black dress look more put together is to add a light blazer or jacket. I personally love a crisp white blazer with a black dress but the colour of the blazer can be catered to your style and taste. If you love colour, go for it! If print is more your thing then by all means add a lovely printed blazer. I just find that simply adding blazer takes the dress to the boardroom and says you're ready for business.
I went for an on-trend blazer from Missguided with ties at the arms and exaggerated bell sleeves. This blazer is actually one half of a suit that you'll be seeing on the blog soon and I took the belt off the shorts and used it to cinch the blazer in at the waist. I found that this gave the look a more interesting shape. Adding a mid heel and a muted bag also helped to keep the look demure and I was really happy with how the look turned out. I'd personally have no qualms wearing this to a meeting.
Another way you could make this dress meeting appropriate is to wear it as a top and add a midi skirt. The possibilities are endless with a little black dress so definitely experiment with yours and come up with more fun and interesting ways to wear it for different occasions.
The third and final look is for a night out and for this particular look I just wanted to let the dress shine. I opted to keep jewellery to a minimum and made the look a little more interesting by clashing some prints with my accessories. I went for a leopard print with the shoes and clashed that with a checked clutch bag from Stella & Dot. I like that even though these prints are so different they worked well together and made the look a whole lot more interesting.
I added a leather jacket for the cool factor but this is totally optional and can be left out if you prefer. I always tend to take some sort of outerwear out with me on a night out just in case the weather changes and I thought this leather jacket edged the look up a bit without detracting from the entire look. This is a perfect night out outfit for me and is something I can feel comfortable in all night and cut some serious shapes in.
These are just three of the ways I would style this dress but believe me; that is just the tip of the iceberg. I could probably style this dress in ten different ways just for the summer and a few more every season of the year. This post is just to show you that items you already have in your wardrobe can be super versatile and with a little bit of creativity you can definitely get that cost per wear out of your items.
I hope you enjoyed the three looks I put together and I would love to know which look was your favourite. I would also love to know how you would style this dress in your very own way for the summer so leave your suggestions in the comments below. I look forward to reading them!
